Things to do in Puerto Escondido — Mexico’s Chillest Beach Town
Puerto Escondido is a lovely little beach town in Mexico, about ten miles off the coast of Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Nayarit. It is part of the San Miguel National Park, and is often referred to as the “Queen of the Bay”. It has lots of beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue waters.
Playa Principality. The seven interconnected beaches, Playa Principality, that anchors Puerto Escondido, is among the most famous for surfing. Many beginners come to play and discover this unique sport. It’s very popular with the surfers, many of whom rent condos nearby to accommodate their surfboards and other gear. Many local residents and businesses are working toward getting green certification, so you will see recycled bins, solar-powered lights, and eco-toilets being used around the Playa.
Playa Carrizalillo. It is the perfect place for snorkeling, because of its many man-made reefs and wonderful coral reefs. There are also plenty of restaurants, hotels, shops, and Puerto Escondido cultural attractions. Many families come here for the Playa del Carmen beach, and spend the day enjoying the beach, and then head back to Puerto Escondido for lunch and the nightlife. There is a lovely beachfront cafe in town called La Banderita, so if you are staying at one of the condos or houses there, you won’t miss it.
Puerto Escondido Beach, on the other hand, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The beautiful sand and warm water is the perfect place to unwind after a long day on the highway. Puerto Escondido has some of the best restaurants in Mexico, including two fabulous fine restaurants: Los Micos and Los Chinos. These two restaurants are located at the main beach, just next to the “Tapestado” hotel. You can get a taste of authentic Mexican food in these restaurants, as well as other nearby restaurants and hotels.
Surfing breaks are available on the north end of Puerto Escondido near its western end. This is the main area for surfing, as well as other popular activities like windsurfing, kayaking, jet-skiing, parasailing, boating, wakeboarding, surfing, and kite surfing. There are a number of large private beaches in Puerto Escondido, and most of them have good waves. Due to its close proximity to Los Micos and its access to Highway 200, more cars travel along this stretch of coastal road than any other. There are some very nice hotels in this area, including the Los Chinos Surf Club, which has a surf shop and a lounge.
Playa Principal is just a few minutes away from the beach, but it is a bit farther out in Puerto Escondido proper. It is one of Puerto Escondido’s main tourist attractions and is packed with restaurants, shops, bars, and nightclubs. Playa Principal is also where you will find the Puerto Escondido Hotels, many of which are within walking distance. Of all the places in Puerto Escondido where tourists usually go surfing, Playa Principal is probably one of the best spots in the entire area.
One of the best puerto escondido beach resorts is the Playa Prieta Hacienda. This resort is only a few blocks from the beach and is a favorite among visitors who like to stay out at the beaches during their stay in Puerto Escondido. There are many restaurants in the area that serve delicious Mexican food, but the locals always make sure to provide visitors with the best tasting tapas they can: a favorite of many visitors, especially if they return here for a second or third time.
When you visit Puerto Escondido, you really should try out some of these incredible beaches. Regardless of whether you want to surf, snorkel, or simply just lounge on the beach, there is plenty to do in Puerto Rico. Playa Zicatela, Playa Principal, and the beaches surrounding the towns of Puerto Escondido are definitely some of the most popular spots on the island of Mexico.
